Artist Statement

My paintings utilize color to explore and meditate on energy and space through paint. I have an intuitive attraction to vibrant colors from my experiences growing up in San Antonio, surrounded by visual representations of my Hispanic heritage. The colors chosen are often vibrant and appear unusual when placed next to one another. They contrast between moments of tension and tranquility. When viewed as a whole, the colors form a dynamic image through their relationships with one another.

My paintings are based on places where I have grown up or that, in some way have greatly impacted my life. The colors I choose are a combination of those that are actually present in the landscape and those that I envision when looking back on my memories of these places. The combination of vibrant colors expresses my feelings and recollections of each setting and breathes a new life into a landscape that is often overlooked. The fabricated terrain and sky serve as a domain for the interplay of energy and space explored through color relationships and mark-making.

The mark-making alters the topography and aids in the perception of each section of land. Some marks force the land into its respective space, while others create energy by bringing the terrain forward and backward out of its visual plane. The flat passages of color challenge the idea of space by combining, pushing, and pulling the expanse. The resulting image challenges how the space is viewed.
