Opening Reception: Healing Through Art
Please join the Mesquite Arts Council for the opening reception of an exhibition featuring local artist Eric Thayer.
Thayer’s work explores the relationship between art, mindfulness, meditation, personal expression, and the social systems that shape our communities. His diverse creative practice includes performance, ceramics, sculpture, digital media, and other forms of artistic expression.
Born on federal property in North Carolina, Thayer has lived in several states, including Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and New York. His experiences living in different regions have exposed him to a broad range of social and cultural systems. His work examines how these systems are reflected in objects, behaviors, and spaces and how they influence the ways individuals and communities create meaning.
Thayer often uses intervention, noisemaking, and appropriation as artistic strategies in response to observations of power, rituals, and social norms. His work encourages viewers to consider familiar environments and behaviors from new perspectives.
Thayer is an alumnus of the University of Toledo Center for Visual Arts in Ohio and the Kathrine McGovern College of the Arts at the University of Houston in Texas. He has also studied multiple times at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina and was recently awarded a Winter Residency at Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft in North Carolina.
Outside of his studio practice, Thayer enjoys hiking, biking, kayaking, and spending time outdoors. He currently lives in the Dallas area, where he continues to explore and respond to the behaviors, environments, and systems he encounters.
The opening reception provides an opportunity to meet the artist, experience his work, and learn more about his creative process and the ideas that inform his practice.
